General Friedrich Kussin (1895-1944), the German commander of Arnhem in the Netherlands, was ambushed and killed by British paratroopers at a crossroads on September 17, 1944 during Operation Market Garden. This is a photograph of Josef Willeke, his dead driver, also killed in the attack by multiple machine gun fire, along with his interpreter, Max Köster. The three Germans were apparently only armed with second-rank obsolete rifles.
