A genetic study was recently conducted in order to determine the origin of the Xoloitzcuintli breed. The study did NOT find a close genetic relationship between Xoloitzcuintli and the Chinese Crested Dog, another hairless breed that is cited by the American Kennel Club as an ancestor to the Xoloitzcuintli.
The Cambodian Razorback resembles any other dog at first glance, but a harder stare reveals where its name comes from. The dog has a unique “razor” of hair that runs down the length of its spine. Found in Cambodia mostly, this tropical dog is also odd in that it sports long hair which is rare for a dog from warmer climates.
The New Guinea Singing Dog is said to be the rarest breed in the world. It has a fox-like appearance and is known for its ability to vary the pitch of its howl. They exhibit a structural flexibility that allows them to squeeze through any space that will fit their head. While they can be domesticated, they are not recommended as a pet. They exhibit wild dog tendencies for an extreme hunting drive and a desire to roam and explore.
