japanese lantern festival - como park zoo st. paul, mn

I went to the Japanese Lantern Lighting Festival at Como Park Zoo in St. Paul, MN last Sunday. The afternoon long activities ended at dusk when paper lanterns were lit and floated across the Frog Pond in front of the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory. This event takes place every August on the Como Park Zoo & Conservatory grounds in a tribute to Japan's annual Obon Holiday. Buddhist tradition says that during Obon ancestral spirits revisit their families for three days. Many Japanese will return…

A beautiful send off for visiting ancestral spirits… Obon Matsuri is a Japanese Buddhist festival that is a time for honouring the souls of dead ancestors whose spirits supposedly come back to visit. Digital photos I took at the 13th Annual Obon Lantern Festival at the Forest Hills Cemetery in Jamaica Plain. July 14th 2011. Mostly used the shortest possible f-stop on the camera and took 1/4 to 2 second exposures.

I could bring wok to fry them and piping flute to fill them. Might be cool to insert fillings (plum jam, azuki red bean paste, chocolate etc. Japanese Sweets, Japanese Food, Asian Cooking, Food Festival, Street Food, Love Food, Sweet Tooth, Cooking Recipes, Favorite Recipes

TORO-NAGASHI IN HAWAII... TO REMEMBER

LANTERN OFFERINGS ON THE WATER... Candle-lit lanterns will be launched from the beach this evening to honor those who have perished that year and pay respect to our ancestors. When I first moved to Hawaii nearly 20 years ago we lived on the 16th floor over looking the Ala Wai Canal, Diamond head, and the Pacific Ocean if we stood on a chair on the lanai and craned our necks so we looked kind of like Linda Blair in The Exorcist. One evening I looked out and the canal was lit by thousands of…
