Chrysanthemum Directed Drawing

Chrysanthemum Directed Drawing (My Silly Firsties)

Hi friends! I wanted to share a fun little activity we did this week to go along with one of everyone's favorite Back to School read alouds! I've mentioned before how much I LOVE directed drawings.

Back to school activities: Chrysanthemum Name "Slider" Craft. Includes 6 black and white patterns, as well as color. What a fun way to practice recognizing, writing and spelling your name. :-) Love Kevin Henkes' story "Chrysanthemum". Also includes matching name cards.

Chrysanthemum activity: Crinkle the heart every time she's teased and smooth it out when someone tries to make her feel better. Put: "Before you speak, think and be smart. It's hard to fix a wrinkled heart." on the heart with kids' names on bandaids at the end of the story.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month so I thought it would be a great time to talk about kindness. Recently I posted about creating a kindness wall in my home to promote kind acts. Today’s activity helps kids think about how your words and actions impact other people. I did this activity with my own kids to help them understand the long lasting effect their words can have, even after they say sorry.

After reading Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes, your students can make a Chrysanthemum stick puppet and discuss the problems that Chrysanthemum had while starting school! They can also discuss ways to help the negative situations in the story and see how being kind to one another makes everyone feel better!
