UKSA (United Kingdom Sailing Academy) - Water Sports Activities in Cowes, IOW
John Redfern (born Charles Poynter in 1855) started out as a tailor in Cowes, England. He began making dresses for sports (riding, tennis, yachting, etc.), which probably makes him the first sportswear designer. He opened a salon in London in 1881, followed by ones in New York, Rhode Island, Edinburgh, and Paris. In 1888 he added the patronage of Queen Victoria and the Princess of Wales to his roster of clients. He and his sons are credited with popularizing the high waist or Grecian style.
