This ornate Neo-Byzantine style cathedral opened in 1882 and is the largest Orthodox cathedral in the Baltic region. The cathedral was converted into a Lutheran church under German occupation in World War I, in the early 1960’s the Soviets turned the cathedral into a planetarium. With the fall of Communism and the independence of Latvia, the cathedral was restored in the late 1990’s and consecrated in 2000 by Archbishop Alexander.
