Asakusa at night. Shot with a Canon 7D SLR. The subject is the five-storied pagoda within the precincts of Sensoji Temple. There apparently has been a pagoda within the temple precincts since around 942 A.D. Like much else of the downtown area, however, the current structure was built after World War 2. I believe that the building itself is just over 50 metres in height. However, I am not quite sure of the official figures. For photographers, it is especially beautiful at night. The front shutter of a store in Asakusa, Tokyo. It depicts a brawl between competing fire brigades in old Edo (modern Tokyo). To go into a little more detail, in the Shogun's capital city, built largely of wood and paper, fire was a real danger. Accordingly, there were numerous fire brigades (both official and unofficial) that competed with one another. Obviously, fights sometimes broke out. A video clip showing some of the wonderful Kimono Tumblers made by Asakusa Tatsumiya in Asakusa Tokyo.
Located behind the Nakamise stalls when facing Sensoji Temple, Asakusa Tatsumiya is a friendly and warm third-generation business that traditionally produced kimono and associated accessories. The Kimono Tumbler shown here shows a sankin-kōtai procession that was made by a daimyo (a samurai lord) between their home province and Edo (modern-day Tokyo). The tradition was one means by which the Tokugawa Shogunate exercised control over other powerful samurai families. Tumbler, Stalls, Traditional
