In 2003, a male kitten was found on Misao Ihara's property. It was adopted into the family became Ihara’s constant companion. According to Little More Books, Ihara named the cat "Fukumaru" in hope that "the god of fuku (good fortune) would come everything will be smoothed over like maru (circle)." The photographs documenting their bond were compiled into a bestseller, "Misao The Big Mama and Fukumaru The Cat". Ihara believes its popularity is due to the tranquility of life portrayed.
