Turner Syndrome Turner syndrome is a genetic defect in which one of the two sex chromosomes is missing or defective. This disease affects 1 in 2500 live female births each year. The characteristics of Turner syndrome are multiple and vary widely from patient to patient. Most all individuals affected by this syndrome have short stature, usually growing to an adult height of around 4 feet 8 inches. Other common characteristics in appearance are a short, often webbed neck and low-set ears.
The diagnosis of TTTS is made with an ultrasound evaluation shows a twin pregnancy with one placenta, twins of the same sex in separate amniotic sacs, and polyhydramnios in the recipient’s sac and oligohydramnios in the donor’s sac. Amniotic fluid volume is measured with ultrasound by determining the deepest pocket measurement from the patient’s skin to her back. This measurement is known as the maximum vertical pocket (MVP).
A Greek doctor has photographed an extremely rare moment as a baby is born, still encased inside the amniotic sac.
A Greek doctor snapped this amazing image during a caesarian section. Unusually, the amniotic sac remained intact as the birth progressed. Typically it breaks, but this time it did not -leading to the baby not even being aware it had been born. Until the amniotic sac breaks, the baby will continue to receive oxygen and nutrients from the placenta. This baby was born safe and healthy.
