This is a basic Japanese lantern design, but it's easy to customize once you start making your own concrete molds.

Lighting in a Japanese garden may be practical, but metal, stone and granite lanterns are mostly ornamental and often extremely beautiful, being originally used to illuminate pathways within ancient Buddhist temples and shrines. While most outdoor spaces do have room for a lamp lit by a candle or an electric light, Japanese lanterns (toro) add an immediate oriental touch to any garden design, especially when paired with a maple or a pot of bamboo, immediately becoming a subtle focal point.

So we have been busy getting ready for the Kona Coffee Festival. I have several lanterns finished and have added some new designs. One of the things I loved about visiting Japan was seeing the hundreds of lanterns at all the parks and temples. The town of Nara had some of my favorites.
