This little figure is so sweet, he is called Jizo (地蔵) Jizo are stone images placed along pathways. They look like little monks and indeed their origin was influenced by Buddhism. But they belong more to folk beliefs. He is the protector of women, children, and travelers in the six realms of existence. Jizo is special to pregnant women and to those whose children have died.
