8:19am, Feb.18th 4 inches of fresh snow has accumulated in central area of Kyoto city. Chief priest shoveling snow for visitors. Taken at Nanzen-ji(南禅寺).

The main gate to the Chion Temple is the largest in Japan. It's 24 meters tall and was built in 1619. It leads to the main complex which is the home temple for the Jodo Sect of Buddhism in Japan.

Temple of Shining Mercy
The temple's official name, Jisho-ji (慈照寺), means "The Temple of Shining Mercy." Ginkaku-ji is a Rinzai temple originally established as a villa for Shogun Askikaga Yoshimasa. Plans for the villa began in 1460, but it was not until the death of Yoshimasa that the villa became a Zen temple, known as Jisho-ji. The main hall (Kannon-do) was initially meant to be covered in silver, as it's Edo period nickname suggests, in tribute to Kinkaku-ji which was commissioned by his grandfather…

Kyoto Snow!
It snowed on my last day in Kyoto! I took the bus over to Ginkakuji to see the beautiful gardens covered with snow. It was so incredibly dreamy! Philisopher's Path. The snowy view from breakfast at my hotel. And then it was time to get the Nozomi Shinkansen back to Tokyo. I'm noticing a pattern, I always almost tear up with happiness on the Shinkansen trip back to Tokyo after a nice trip because I feel so lucky to be able to live in this incredible country.
